A Debate on How Best to Regulate Money in Australian Politics

The Social Justice Initiative, in partnership with the Parliament of Victoria, Swinburne University and ABC Radio National, is hosting a debate on the topic of ‘Dollars and Democracy: How Best to Regulate Money in Australian Politics.
The debate will be moderated by ABC Radio National presenter, Peter Mares, and four speakers, Mr Adem Somyurek MP, Mr Michael O’Brien MP, Ms Sue Pennicuik MLC and Mr John Roskam, Director of the Institute of Public Affairs, will examine different perspectives on how the current system should be changed in order to maintain the democratic integrity of Australian politics.

SJI Project Funding
The Social Justice Initiative is seeking to fund Research Projects on social
justice in 2009/10. The projects should make a key contribution to our
understanding of social justice and produce a range of high quality research
outcomes. SJI is particularly interested in projects that take original approaches to social justice issues and provide leadership on these issues.

SJI Awarded Grant
The Social Justice Initiative is part of a venture that has been awarded $155,000 for 2009 to establish a project on Energy and Poverty. The project will research the likely social justice impact of the introduction of smart meters and the associated pricing innovations on low-income households in four Australian states.

DOLLARS & DEMOCRACY: A Debate on How Best to Regulate Money in Australia Politics
There is a widespread dissatisfaction with how money influences Australian politics. An ‘arms race’ exists amongst political parties with increasing amounts of money being spent on election campaigns, prompting claims that elections can be bought. Politicians from all sides of politics are calling for reform of the existing system of political funding.
