Summary
Sustainable and just responses to the challenges of climate change mitigation and adaptation will clearly require a wide range of actions at global, national, regional and local levels. There is increasing evidence of the importance of developing and implementing locally specific climate change understandings and responses given the variability of local community vulnerabilities and resilience. This project therefore focuses particularly on challenges and opportunities at the local and regional levels. Relevant policy issues at local and regional levels are likely to include: emergency management, health, food security, housing, land use planning, energy, water, transport, agriculture, industry and employment, education and training, taxation and income security and community development. The key question is: what local social, economic, technological and political transformations are needed to reduce carbon emissions and adapt to climate change in ways that are healthy, just and sustainable?
